Mathematical Standards

1.MD.A
Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. (1.MD.A.2)
1.MD.C
Represent and interpret data. (1.MD.C.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP6.
Attend to precision.

Students use their growing understanding of numbers to 100 to make estimates and measurements in nonstandard units (links) and standard units (inches). They evaluate the reasonableness of their estimates and learn to recognize that the measure of a length is dependent on the size of the unit of measure.

Content in this Lesson

  • Recognizing that the measure of a length is dependent on the size of the unit of measure (e.g., a pencil is 4 large paper clips or 6 small paper clips) [E9].
  • Estimating length in nonstandard (links) and standard (inches) units [E11].
  • Distinguishing between a reasonable estimate and an unreasonable
    one [MPE3].
  • Measuring length in links and inches.
  • Developing number sense for two-digit numbers.
  • Showing work [MPE5].
  • Using labels to show what numbers mean [MPE6].

Materials Preparation

Prepare a 100-Link Chain. Make a 100-link chain using different colors for each ten. Display it in the classroom where students can easily see its full length.

Prepare 10-Link Chains. Make one 10-link chain for each student. All the links in one 10-link chain should be the same color. However, the colors of the 10-link chains can differ from student to student.

Prepare 10-Inch Rulers. Make one copy of the 10-Inch Ruler Master for each student. Cut out the ruler. This modified ruler is used in the lesson because it is easier for students to add groups of 10 inches than groups of 12 inches.

Make a List of Classroom Items to Measure. Prepare a list on chart paper of classroom items to be measured. Examples of items are given in Figure 1. The items should have a length that can be measured of between
30 to 100 inches.

E9.
Recognize that the measure of a length is dependent on the size of the unit of measure (e.g., a pencil is 4 large paper clips or 6 small paper clips).
E11.
Estimate lengths using non-standard and standard units (e.g., links, inches).
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
MPE6.
Use labels. I use labels to show what numbers mean.

E6.
Use skip counting to find the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.
E8.
Recognize the relationship between larger and smaller units of measure (e.g., 1 hour is 60 minutes; 1 dime is
2 nickels).
