TIMS Task

Ask students to use the Addition Strategies Menu and Subtraction Strategies Menu as they solve these problems.

  1. 83 miles; strategies will vary. One possible strategy is to use the number line and count up 46 from 37 to get to 83.
  2. 28 miles

One possible strategy is to count up from 95 to 123:

95 + 5 = 100

100 + 23 = 123

5 + 23 = 28

R. Traveling Problems

Use the Addition Strategies Menu and Subtraction Strategies Menu.

  1. A truck delivers newspapers. It travels 37 miles from the newspaper office to its first stop at Pete's Market. It travels another 46 miles to its next stop at Java Hut. How far does the truck travel from the office to the second stop? Show or tell how you solved the problem.
  2. On Monday, the truck traveled 123 miles delivering papers. On Tuesday, it traveled 95 miles. How much farther did it go on Monday? Show or tell how you know.
