Summarizing the Lesson

  • Who do you think the thief is? Explain why you think so. (Answers will vary. One likely culprit is Howard since the tread on the thief's shoe matches the tread on Howard's shoe. Howard may have wanted to raise money for the museum's Sumerian exhibit.)

Solve more Volume Problems. Refer students to the Soup for Lunch pages in the Student Activity Book. Read the introduction at the top of the page to set the context of the problems. Show students a 2-cup measuring cup and tell them that Tess and Sam are making 2-cups of soup for each person at the luncheon.

  • If 2 people come to lunch, how many cups of soup need to be made? (2 cups per person so 2 + 2 = 4 cups of soup.)
  • If 4 people come to lunch, how many cups of soup need to be made? (2 cups per person so 2 × 4 = 8 cups of soup.)

Ask students to work on Questions 1–6 with a partner. As students are working observe strategies students are using to solve each problem.

Use the Soup for Lunch pages in the Student Activity Book to assess students' abilities to solve multidigit multiplication problems using mental math strategies [E3]; solve multidigit division problems using mental math strategies [E4]; multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of ten [E5]; solve multistep word problems involving the four operations [E8]; use the relationship between larger and smaller units of measure to solve problems [E9].
