Mathematical Standards

3.OA.A
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. (3.OA.A.3)
3.OA.C
Multiply and divide within 100. (3.OA.C.7)
3.OA.D
Solve problems involving the four operations, and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic. (3.OA.D.8)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make sense of structure.

Students use models and strategies to divide $5.00 among three children. They devise, carry out, and communicate their problem-solving strategies. Students also review each other's work to provide feedback that informs revision of their written explanations.

Materials Preparation

A Collection of Money. Prepare sets of real or pretend money, consisting of 10 pennies, 10 nickels, 10 dimes, 10 quarters, and 5 one-dollar bills for each student. The Pennies, Nickels, and Dimes Masters from Unit 10 Lesson 4 and the Quarters and Dollars Masters in this lesson can be used to prepare sets of money for each student, if needed.

Student Work Samples. Prepare to display copies of student work for students to review and discuss. There are three student work samples provided, but it is always valuable to choose work from previous years or other classes.

E1.
Represent 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication and multidigit division problems using counters, tiles, rectangular arrays, drawings, stories, and number sentences.
E6.
Interpret remainders of multidigit division problems.
E8.
Solve multistep word problems involving the four operations.
MPE1.
Know the problem. I read the problem carefully. I know questions to answer and what information is important.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving problems.
MPE3.
Check for reasonableness. I look back at my solution to see if my answer makes sense. If it does not, I try again.
MPE4.
Check my calculations. If I make mistakes, I correct them.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
MPE6.
Use labels. I use labels to show what numbers mean.
