TIMS Task

Use this DPP item to practice the last six facts.

1–2.
If your calculator has the constant feature, press 4 + 4 = = = = = = =. Each time = is pressed, the constant number (4) and the constant operation (addition) is repeated. Some students may find it helpful to count by twos, accentuating every other number: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, etc. Then, count by 8s.

Have students write down the numbers as they count. Discuss patterns in the two lists.

3.
Students circle 24, 28, 32, 48, and 56.

4.
Answers will vary. To find 4 × 8, students can skip count by 4 eight times: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32

5.
6 × 7 = 42; 42 is not a multiple of 4 or 8.

6.
2 × 6 = 12 and 12 + 12 = 24, so 6 × 4 = 24.

P. Skip Counting

  1. Skip count by 4s to 100. Say the numbers quietly to yourself. Write the numbers.
  2. Skip count by 8s until you pass 100. Say the numbers quietly to yourself. Write the numbers.
  3. Circle the numbers in your lists that are products of (answers to) the last six facts:
    4 × 6           4 × 7           4 × 8
    6 × 7           6 × 8           7 × 8
  4. How can you use skip counting to find these facts?
  5. Which of the last six facts is not circled? Why not?
  6. John knows his multiplication facts for the 2s. Show how to use these facts to solve 4 × 6.
