Lesson 4

Reading a Map

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Summarizing the Lesson

  • Is your estimate similar?
  • If not, what did you do differently?
  • Does everyone agree with the estimate given?

Give students a few minutes to work with all the students who worked on the same problem.

  • Compare the two estimates. Which distance is longer? (Possible response: The walking distance is usually longer.)
  • Is this true for all of the locations?

Give students copies of the Joe's Chicago Map Assessment Masters and direct students to work on the questions with a partner.

Use the Joe's Chicago Map Assessment Masters with the Feedback Box to assess students' abilities to use ratios to solve scale and distance problems [E3]; identify and describe locations in all four quadrants using ordered pairs [E6]; and know the problem [MPE1].
