Summarizing the Lesson

After all groups have had a chance to estimate the distance between the two locations two ways, ask each group to review the work displayed for the locations they were assigned.

  • Is your estimate similar?
  • If not, what did you do differently?
  • Does everyone agree with the estimate given?

Give students a few minutes to work with all the students who worked on the same problem.

Students should confirm, revise, and refine the work on the chart paper.

  • Compare the two estimates. Which distance is longer? (Possible response: The walking distance is usually longer.)
  • Is this true for all of the locations?

Give students copies of the Joe's Chicago Map Assessment Masters and direct students to work on the questions with a partner.
