Lesson 3

Using a Coordinate Map

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3

Summarizing the Lesson

  • This is a map of the objects in Mr. Moreno's class. Where is the desk? (−2, −1.5)
  • Milo the mouse moved Mr. Origin and students made this map. Where is the desk? (2, −1.5)
  • Does this location match the previous map? (Possible response: The coordinates do not match the previous map, but the table did not move.)
  • Milo the mouse moved Mr. Origin again and students made this map. Where is the desk?
    (2, 1.5)
  • Does this location match the previous map? (Possible response: The coordinates do not match the previous map but the table did not move.)
  • Did the desk move? (Possible response: No, Mr. Origin did.)
  • Do you think the distance between the desk and round table will change if Mr. Origin is moved? (Possible response: No, because the objects did not move, just how to describe the location changed.)

Organize students into groups of three. Distribute the packets that include Mr. Moreno's Map Master, Milo Moved Mr. Origin Master, and Milo Moved Mr. Origin Again Master to each group. Ask each student to take one of the maps of Mr. Moreno's class from the packet. Tell students to answer Questions 1 and 2 on the Master assigned to them.

  • Compare your answers to Questions 1 and 2. What happens when Mr. Origin is moved?

Give student groups a few minutes to discuss this question and compare their responses to Questions 1 and 2.

  • What happens to the distance between objects when Mr. Origin is moved? (Possible response: The distance between the objects in the room does not change.)
  • What happens to the location of the objects? (Possible response: The location does not change but the description of the location does change.)

Ask students to complete the Kingdom of Nuggles Assessment Masters independently.

Use the Kingdom of Nuggles Assessment Master to assess students' abilities to use ratios to solve scale and distance problems [E3]; plot points in all four quadrants from ordered pairs [E6]; and show work [MPE5].
