Mathematical Standards

5.G.A
Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems. (5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2)
5.G.B
Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties. (5.G.B.3, 5.G.B.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

This Workshop lesson provides opportunities for students to address missing concepts, practice skills, or extend their learning as needed. Students further develop their abilities to describe, analyze, and classify two-dimensional shapes and their properties.

Content in this Lesson

  • Identifying and describing two-dimensional shapes [E4].
  • Classifying two-dimensional shapes in a hierarchy based on properties [E5].
  • Justifying conclusions using geometric properties [E7].

Materials Preparation

Prepare Display of Shape Sort Cards. Cut apart the Quadrilateral Cards from the Student Activity Book. If needed, also cut apart the cards on the Shape Sort Cards Master from Lesson 5 and the Shapes Zoo Pieces from Lesson 6 and prepare these for display during the lesson.

Prepare Targeted Practice. Place copies of the Shape Sort Cards Masters from Lesson 5 and the Shapes Zoo Pieces from Lesson 6 in a learning center with a two-column table with the columns labeled “Yes” and “No” so students can play Name That Property. This activity is described in Summarizing the Lesson.

Prepare Assessment Masters. Make single-sided copies of the Triangle Sort Cards section and the Louis's Sorting Board section of the Louis Sorts Triangles Assessment Masters. Students will need to cut apart the cards and separate the sorting board from the questions.
