LESSON | SESSIONS | DESCRIPTION | SUPPLIES |
---|---|---|---|
LESSON 1What's Below Zero |
1 | Students explore negative numbers in a variety of contexts and use number lines to represent numbers and solve problems. |
|
LESSON 2Introduce Coordinates |
2–3 | Students learn to use Cartesian coordinates to locate points in all four quadrants. |
|
LESSON 3Using a Coordinate Map |
2–3 | Students make a coordinate map of objects in the classroom. They then use the map and the map scale to estimate the distances between objects. |
|
LESSON 4Reading a Map |
1 | Map reading is one of the most common uses of a coordinate system in everyday life. In this lesson, students use coordinates to locate and measure distances between locations. |
|
LESSON 5Plotting and Describing Shapes |
2–3 | Students help José at The Great Shape Factory to plot and connect points to form shapes. After making and describing shapes using ordered pairs, students use the properties of the shapes to sort triangles and quadrilaterals. |
|
LESSON 6Classifying Shapes |
2–3 | Students classify polygons and justify those classifications based on geometric properties in the context of designing a “shapes zoo.” |
|
LESSON 7Workshop: Shapes Classification |
1 | This Workshop lesson provides opportunities for students to address missing concepts, practice skills, or extend their learning as needed. Students further develop their abilities to describe, analyze, and classify two-dimensional shapes and their properties. |
|
LESSON 8Midterm Test |
1–2 | Students take a paper-and-pencil test that assesses skills and concepts studied in the first six units. |
