Plotting and Describing Shapes

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3
X

Mathematical Standards

5.G.A
Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems. (5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2)
5.G.B
Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties. (5.G.B.3, 5.G.B.4)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students help José at The Great Shape Factory to plot and connect points to form shapes. After making and describing shapes using ordered pairs, students use the properties of the shapes to sort triangles and quadrilaterals.

Content in this Lesson

  • Identifying and describing two-dimensional shapes [E4].
  • Locating and describing locations in all four quadrants using ordered pairs [E6].
  • Justifying conclusions using geometric properties [E7].
  • Using the properties of shapes to sort and compare shapes [E5].
  • Showing thinking [MPE5].

Materials Preparation

Prepare Targeted Practice. Place copies of the Shape Sort Cards: Triangles and Shape Sort Cards: Quadrilaterals pages from the Student Activity Book in a learning center with a two-column table with the columns labeled “Yes” and “No” so students can play Name That Property. This activity is described in Summarizing the Lesson.

Prepare Display of Shape Sort Cards. Cut apart the cards on the Shape Sort Cards Masters and prepare these for display during the lesson.
