Lesson 3

Using a Coordinate Map

Est. Class Sessions: 2–3
X

Mathematical Standards

5.G.A
Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems. (5.G.A.1, 5.G.A.2)
5.NF.B
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division. (5.NF.B.5)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students make a coordinate map of objects in the classroom. They then use the map and the map scale to estimate the distances between objects.

Content in this Lesson

  • Using ratios to solve scale and distance problems [E3].
  • Describing locations in all four quadrants using ordered pairs [E6].
  • Measuring distance to the nearest centimeter.
  • Plotting points in all four quadrants from ordered pairs [E6].

Materials for the Teacher

Materials Preparation

Prepare Objects for Mapping. Identify a space in your classroom that is about 8 × 10 meters or smaller. Place Mr. Origin in the center of this space. Use masking tape to indicate the x- and y- axis on the floor. Look around this area and identify or place 2 objects per student group and 2 or 3 additional objects. See the TIMS Tip. Use an index card to label each object with a letter. Be sure there is at least one labeled object in each quadrant and space the objects about 2 meters apart. See Figure 1.

TIMS Tip

Choose the number of objects and the size of each group according to your class size. Groups of 3 students work best for this activity: one student measures the x- coordinate, one student measures y-coordinate, and one student records the data. If you have a smaller number of students, ask them to work in pairs and to locate more than 2 objects.

Prepare Table. List the objects students will map on a display of the Objects in Room _____ page from the Student Activity Book.

Prepare Packets of Copies. Organize the following copies into a packet for each group and clip them together: Mr. Moreno's Class Map Master, Milo Moved Mr. Origin Master, Milo Moved Mr. Origin Again Master.
