Lesson 4

Add Mixed Numbers

Est. Class Sessions: 1

Summarizing the Lesson

Ask selected students to explain how to add 11/2 + 25/6.

  • Does this sum make sense? Why or why not?
  • Is the answer in simplest form? How do you know?
  • Can you use circle pieces to prove that the answer is correct?
  • Can you use this method to solve 13/4 and 29/12?
  • Is there another way or a more efficient way to solve this problem?

Alternatively, present a more complicated problem that cannot be solved with fraction circle pieces such as 22/3 + 14/15 and discuss students' solution strategies.

Assign Check-In: Questions 9–13 for students to complete individually. Students will add mixed numbers using paper and pencil or mental math.

Use Check-In: Questions 9–13 on the Add Mixed Numbers pages in the Student Guide and the corresponding Feedback Box in the Teacher Guide to assess students' abilities to add mixed numbers using mental math, fraction circle pieces, and paper-and-pencil methods [E8]; find equivalent fractions [E1]; find common denominators and use them to add mixed numbers [E10]; simplify fractions to simplest form [E2]; estimate sums of mixed numbers [E9]; find a strategy [MPE2]; and check for reasonableness [MPE3].

The Workshop in Lesson 6 provides targeted practice with these expectations.
