Mathematical Standards

5.NF.A
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. (5.NF.A.1, 5.NF.A.2)
5.NF.B
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division. (5.NF.B.4, 5.NF.B.6, 5.NF.B.6, 5.NF.B.7)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students use fraction circle pieces and rectangles to model fraction multiplication. They explore a variety of ways to find the product of two fractions. Students use paper folding to look for patterns and generalize a paper-and-pencil procedure for multiplying fractions.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing multiplication of fractions with area models, number lines, number sentences, drawings, and stories [E3].
  • Multiplying fractions using area models and drawings [E4].
  • Solving word problems involving multiplication of fractions [E5].
  • Making connections between paper-and-pencil strategies and area models.
  • Explaining the effects of factors less than and greater than 1 on the product of fractions [E6].
  • Estimating the product of fractions and solving problems a second way to check for reasonableness [MPE3].

E3.
Represent addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions with area models, number lines, number sentences, drawings, and stories.
E4.
Multiply and divide fractions using area models, drawings, and number lines.
MPE3.
Check for reasonableness. I look back at my solution to see if my answer makes sense. If it does not, I try again.
