Lesson 8

Multiply Two Fractions

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Present students with the following problem:

Josh ate 1/10 of a candy bar and left 9/10 of it. If Sam ate 2/3 of what is left of the candy bar, how much of a whole candy bar did he eat?

  • Did Josh leave a lot or a little of the candy bar? How do you know? (He left a lot. 9/10 is close to the whole candy bar.)
  • How big do you think the answer will be? Why? (The answer will be pretty close to 2/3 because 9/10 is close to 1. The product will be close to 1 × 2/3.)

Ask students to first draw a picture that represents the problem. Next ask them to solve the problem. Finally, select volunteers to demonstrate their solution strategies. See Figure 12 for possible solution strategies.

Possible solution strategies for 2/3 × 9/10 = 18/30 = 6/10 = 3/5 of a candy bar
