TIMS Task

To begin the game, students draw a set of boxes on their paper. Use the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 from a set of Digit Cards. Choose one digit at random from the set of cards. Students place the digit in a box to try to get a sum of two fractions that is closest to but less than 1. Once a digit is placed, it cannot be moved. Choose a second digit without replacing the first in the deck. Play continues until you have read enough digits to fill the boxes.

Students then add their fractions to decide who wins the round. For example if one student has 1/4 + 3/6 = 3/4, and a second student has 3/4 + 1/6 = 11/12, the second student will win the round since 11/12 is closer to one than 3/4.

This game can be played as a class with the teacher drawing the cards or in pairs. If playing in pairs, each pair will need a set of Digit Cards with the digits 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8. When playing with a partner, students can take turns drawing the cards.

BB. Play Fractions Digit Game

You will need Digit Cards for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8. Draw boxes like these on your paper.

As your teacher or a classmate chooses 4 digits from a deck of 6 Digit Cards, place them in the boxes. Try to make a sum of two fractions as close to one as possible but not equal to or greater than 1. Remember, you can use each digit only once. Once you place a digit on your playing board, you cannot move it.
