TIMS Task

Answers for the new estimate for the circumference may vary but should be approximately three times the diameter. One possible response is given.

  1. close enough
  2. crazy; 108 cm
  3. crazy; 45 cm
  4. close enough
  5. crazy; 90 cm
  6. crazy; 369 cm
  7. close enough

Ongoing Assessment

Use Task HH to assess students' abilities to measure the circumference of a circle [E8].

HH. Circumference vs. Diameter

Professor Peabody estimated the circumference and the diameter of some circles. He recorded his estimates below. Some of his estimates are reasonable and some of them are crazy.

Complete the table. If the estimates are reasonable, check the box for “Close Enough.” If the estimates are crazy, check the box for “Crazy” and write a reasonable estimate for the circumference in the next space. The first one is done for you.
