Have connecting cubes or counters, number lines, and ten frames available for students. Encourage students to use a counting-on strategy to solve these problems and to show that strategy with a variety of representations. Have students share their strategies.

  1. Maria picked seven flowers yesterday. Today she picked two more.
    How many flowers does she have in all?

  2. Lisa had some pennies yesterday. Today she found three more.
    Now she has eight pennies. How many pennies did she start with?

  3. Luis had nine marbles in his collection yesterday. Today his uncle gave
    him some more. Now he has eleven marbles. How many marbles did
    his uncle give him?
