Have connecting cubes or counters, number lines, and ten frames available for students. Encourage students to use a counting-on strategy to solve these problems and to show that strategy with a variety of representations. Have students share their strategies. Students may need a part-whole diagram to decide how to find the missing part. For example:

Fill in the missing number to make the number sentence true. You can use counters, your number line, or ten frames.
