Lesson 3

Rolling Along with Links

Est. Class Sessions: 3–4

Before the Lesson

Organize for Data Collection. This lab is a simple experiment that has been used many different ways in first-grade classrooms. Although the experiment itself is simple, doing an activity such as this with first graders requires careful attention to classroom management issues.

One method of handling the data collection is to have student pairs take turns using the ramp with your supervision while the remainder of the class works on drawing the lab setup. Since only five cars will be used, some pairs will use the same cars. This method can also be successful with two ramps and two groups working simultaneously. See the TIMS Tip if you prefer the entire class complete data collection at the same time.

This experiment has also been successful when all groups work simultaneously on separate setups. This requires additional classroom help. Arrange for parent volunteers or older students to help with the data collection.

Let students play with the cars informally when appropriate. Then students will be familiar with the equipment and more focused for the lab.
