Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP7.
Look for and make use of structure.

Students group and count objects by ones, twos, fives, and tens. They trade pennies for nickels and nickels for dimes to find the total amount of money efficiently and organize and efficiently count links in chains to prepare for measurement activities.

Content in this Lesson

  • Identifying relationships among pennies, nickels, and dimes.
  • Representing and identifying quantities using connecting links, coins, and symbols [E1].
  • Connecting representations of quantities (e.g., connecting links, coins, symbols) [E2].
  • Skip counting by fives and tens and counting on to find the value of a set of coins [E3].
  • Grouping and counting objects by twos, fives, and tens and counting on to count the leftovers [E4].

Materials Preparation

Prepare Sets of Coins. Place 35–50 pennies in one plastic bag and 8–10 nickels and 4–5 dimes in another bag for each student pair to use in Part 1 of the lesson.

Prepare Connecting Links. Place a two-color collection of approximately 50 individual connecting links in a bag for each student pair for Part 2 of the lesson. Prepare a chain of 24 links.

Prepare Optional Targeted Practice. Copies of the Ten Frames, Pennies, Nickels, and Dimes page can be placed in a center with a container of pennies and a container of nickels and dimes to provide targeted practice. Students can pull a handful of pennies from the jar and group and count them by fives and tens to find the value of the coins. Ask students to trade the pennies for as many nickels as possible, then count by fives and count on to find the value. Or trade pennies or nickels for as many dimes as possible. Count by tens and count on to find the value.

Prepare Addition Flash Cards. Copy the Addition Flash Cards: Group C using heavier paper or card stock. Cut the flash cards apart and store them in an envelope for each student. You may want to provide each student with two sets, one to use at school and one to take home.
