Mathematical Standards

1.NBT.A
Extend the counting sequence. (1.NBT.A.1)
1.NBT.B
Understand place value. (1.NBT.B.2, 1.NBT.B.3)
1.OA.C
Add and subtract within 20. (1.OA.C.5, 1.OA.C.6)
1.MD.A
Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. (1.MD.A.1, 1.MD.A.2)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in
solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.

Students skip count by fives using chains of connecting links to measure and record the lengths of various objects.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing and identifying quantities using connecting links [E1].
  • Skip counting by fives and tens [E3].
  • Comparing and ordering lengths using comparative language: shorter, longer, shortest, longest [E5].
  • Measuring and estimating length using nonstandard units (e.g., connecting links) [E9].
  • Using labels to identify units of measure [MPE6].

Highlight Fives and Tens on Classroom Number Line. Make sure that the fives and tens on the class number line are still highlighted from work in Unit 5 Lesson 2. If they are not, highlight multiples of five and ten on the classroom number line. Use two different colors of self-adhesive notes; place one color above the multiples of five and the other color above or below the multiples of ten. Multiples of 10 will have two adhesive notes since they are multiples of both 5 and 10. Leave the adhesive notes on the classroom number line for use in later units.

Chain of Connecting Links. Build a chain of 45 links to use for demonstration. Organize the links by grouping five of the same color, then alternate colors. See Figure 1.

Prepare Optional Targeted Practice. In a center, place connecting links and an assortment of objects to provide targeted practice with measuring length using nonstandard units similar to DPP item K Find an Object: Links and item L Find Two Objects: Links.

E1.
Represent and identify quantities using connecting links, coins, and symbols.
E5.
Compare and order quantities (e.g., lengths using comparative language: shorter, longer, shortest, longest).
E9.
Measure and estimate length using nonstandard units (e.g., paper clips) and standard units (e.g., inches).
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
MPE6.
Use labels. I use labels to show what numbers mean.

E12.
Use mental math strategies to add (direct modeling, counting strategies, reasoning from known facts) for the facts in Group C with sums to ten.
