Use DPP item B to practice the addition facts in Group C with sums to ten.

Remind students that they may use ten frames, number lines, or cubes to solve the problems. Ask students to explain how they used the tools.

  1. 10 animals; 6 + 4 = 10

Possible explanation:

I started with six and counted on four animals. I have 10 animals.

  1. 3 + 7 = 10 fish

Possible explanation: I pictured a ten frame and know the ten partner to 7 is 3.

B. Pet Shop

Show or tell how to use ten frames, number lines, or connecting cubes to solve each problem.

  1. Marge cleaned the cages at the pet shop. By mistake she left some cages open. Six kittens and four birds got out. How many animals did Marge have to catch? Write a number sentence.
  2. Bobby had three fish in his aquarium. He went to the pet shop and bought seven more fish. How many fish now live in Bobby's aquarium? Write a number sentence.
