- Xiong, Blia. Nine-in-One, Grr! Grr! Children's Book Press, San Francisco, 2001.
This book is a retelling of a folktale of the Hmong people of Laos. Each page is illustrated with a drawing adapted from Hmong needlework. The drawings are surrounded by borders that students can use as examples for their borders.
The book tells the story of a tiger who is promised nine cubs every year by the great god Shao. The other animals are worried that there will be too many tigers on Earth, so they change the promise to one cub every nine years. Thus, the book can be used to illustrate the difference between the ratios of 9 to 1 and 1 to 9.
- Bartok, Mira, and C. Ronan. Stencils: West Africa: Ghana; Ancient Japan; and Ancient Mexico from the Ancient and Living Cultures series. Good Year Books, Scott Foresman, Glenview, IL, 1996.
This series of books contains designs from various cultures. Although stencils are included, we recommend that children use them only as examples since they are meant to be traced around, not inside, as in the activity.
