Est. Class Sessions: 1–2
X

Mathematical Standards

3.OA.A
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. (3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.A.2, 3.OA.A.3)
3.OA.B
Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. (3.OA.B.5)
3.OA.C
Multiply and divide within 100. (3.OA.C.7)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.

Students solve problems involving multiplication by using clues they find in a drawing of the Lizardland Amusement Park. They write and solve their own multiplication problems about the drawing.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing multiplication problems with number lines, drawings, and number sentences [E1, MPE5].
  • Using appropriate and efficient strategies to solve multiplication problems [E2, MPE2].
  • Reading problems carefully to find what information is important [MPE1].
  • Using labels to explain solutions and strategies [MPE6].

E1.
Represent multiplication and division problems with number lines, drawings, rectangular arrays, and number sentences.
E2.
Use strategies to solve multiplication and division problems (e.g., skip counting, repeated addition, repeated subtraction, reasoning from known facts, and invented).
MPE1.
Know the problem. I read the problem carefully. I know the questions to answer and what information is important.
MPE2.
Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE5.
Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
MPE6.
Use labels. I use labels to show what numbers mean.
