Mathematical Standards

3.OA.A
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division. (3.OA.A.1, 3.OA.A.2, 3.OA.A.3)
3.OA.B
Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. (3.OA.B.5)
3.OA.C
Multiply and divide within 100. (3.OA.C.7)
3.OA.D
Solve problems involving the four operations, and identify and explain patterns in arithmetic. (3.OA.D.9)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP3.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP8.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Students generate the multiplication facts for 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 using constant hoppers on number lines and counting strategies. They record the facts on a blank multiplication table and look for patterns in the table entries. Students use nickels and dimes as a natural context for practicing the facts for 5 and 10.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing multiplication problems with number lines, drawings, and number sentences [E1].
  • Using strategies to solve multiplication problems [E2].
  • Using the multiplication properties of 0 and 1 to solve multiplication problems [E3].
  • Identifying and using patterns to solve the multiplication facts for the 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s [E5].
  • Using a multiplication table to record and retrieve multiplication facts.
  • Solving multiplication problems involving money (nickels and dimes) [E12].

Materials Preparation

Make a Patterns Chart. Use several pieces of chart paper to prepare a chart titled “Patterns for Remembering the Facts.” See Figure 8 for a sample chart. The class will begin the chart in this lesson, add to it in Lessons 4 and 5, and use it to help them solve problems in Lessons 8 and 9.

Triangle Flash Cards. Prepare copies of the Triangle Flash Cards on heavier paper or card stock. Have students cut apart each set and store them in an envelope. You may want to provide each student with two sets, one to use at school and one to take home.
