3.OA.B
Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division. (3.OA.B.5)
3.OA.C
Multiply and divide within 100. (3.OA.C.7)
3.OA.D

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.
MP7.
Look for and make sense of structure.

Students learn how to use Triangle Flash Cards to practice the multiplication facts and track their progress using their Multiplication Facts I Know charts. In this unit, students focus on developing fluency with the multiplication facts for the 5s and 10s. Students also develop the doubling strategy and the break-apart product strategy to complete the multiplication tables they began in Lesson 3.

Content in this Lesson

  • Representing multiplication problems and developing strategies for the multiplication facts with rectangular arrays [E1].
  • Representing multiplication problems with number sentences [E1].
  • Using strategies to solve multiplication problems [E2].
  • Using the multiplication properties of 0 and 1 to solve multiplication problems [E3].
  • Using turn-around facts to solve multiplication problems [E4].
  • Breaking products into the sum of simpler products to solve multiplication problems [E6].
  • Identifying and using patterns to solve the multiplication facts for the 2s, 3s, 5s, 10s, 9s, and square numbers [E5].

Materials Preparation

Subtraction Flash Cards. Students received and prepared the Subtraction Flash Cards for Groups 7–8 in the earlier units and these cards were provided in Unit 6. If needed, copy both sides of the Subtraction Flash Cards on heavier paper or card stock. Have students cut apart each set and store them in an envelope. Provide each student with two sets, one to use at school and one to take home.

Triangle Flash Cards. Prepare copies of the Triangle Flash Cards on heavier paper or card stock. Have students cut apart each set and store them in an envelope. You may want to provide each student with two sets, one to use at school and one to take home.

Small Multiplication Tables. Make copies of the Small Multiplication Table Master on heavier paper or card stock. Provide each student with two small tables. One should be attached to their desk or a folder for use at school. The other should be attached to a folder for use at home.
