TIMS Challenge

DPP Challenge D can be used as a Problem of the Week.

One example is provided for each.

  1. (6 × 3 − 15) × 2 = 6
  2. 15 − 6 ÷ 2 ÷ 3 = 14
  3. 15 × (6 − 3 − 2) = 15
  4. 6 × 2 − 15 ÷ 3 = 7
  5. 15 − (6 × 2 + 3) = 0
  6. 15 × 6 × 3 × 2 = 540

D. Choose Your Number Sentence

Use each number once in any order with any operation sign (−, +, ×, ÷) to write number sentences. Remember, you can use parentheses, too.

  1. ____________________________________ = 6
  2. ____________________________________ = 14
  3. ____________________________________ = 15
  4. ____________________________________ = 7
  5. Write a number sentence using each of these numbers once to get the smallest possible (whole number) answer.
  6. Write a number sentence to give you the largest possible answer.
