TIMS Task

  1. 420 cm tall
    1. The third sister is the tallest. I know because 6/7 is the largest of the three fractions.
    2. Sister one is 5/6 of 420 cm = 350 cm tall; sister two is 5/7 of 420 = 300 cm tall; and sister three is 6/7 of 420 = 360 cm tall.

JJ. Giant Problems

  1. Lee Yah is telling a story to her little sister. The story is about a giant and a fifth-grader. In the story, the body of the giant and the body of the fifth-grader are proportional. The fifth-grader is 140 cm tall and her hand is 12 cm long. If the giant's hand is 36 cm long, how tall is the giant?
    1. The giant has 3 sisters. The first sister is 5/6 as tall as the giant. The second sister is 5/7 as tall as the giant. The third sister is 6/7 as tall as the giant. Which sister is the tallest? How do you know?
    2. Calculate the heights of the three sisters. Show your work.
