Place an appropriate number of counters (10–20) in the bag. Take out several of the counters to create a subtraction situation. For example, place 18 counters in the bag. Remove 9 counters. Ask students how many are left. An appropriate number sentence for this example is 18 − 9 = 9. Students were introduced to this activity in Unit 6.
