TIMS Bit

Use this DPP item to practice using the doubling strategy to solve multiplication problems for the 3s.

Provide counters or connecting cubes to support students' reasoning with models of multiplication.

Moe is wrong. 3 × 3 = 9, so to find 6 × 3, you can double the 9. When you double 9 the answer is 18, so 6 × 3 = 18 not 17.

M. Using Strategies

Joe said, “I know 8 × 3 because I know that 4 × 3 = 12 and I double 12. So 8 × 3 = 24.”

Moe said, “6 × 3 = 17.”

Use Joe's strategy to show if Moe is right or wrong.
