TIMS Task

  1. Mara and Luis should pack the calculators into 3 bags with 18 calculators in each bag. I found my answer by thinking about the ways you can divide 48 into groups. I used counters to find all the ways I could divide and made a table.

Since you can only have 20 calculators per bag you could not use 2 bags. The next would be 3 bags with 18 calculators.
  2. 3 × 18 = 48 or 48 ÷ 3 = 18

FF. Division Story Solving

Luis and Mara were helping Ms. Alfonso put away some supplies. She gave them some plastic bags and 48 calculators. She told them to put more than one calculator in each bag. She also told them that each bag should have an equal number of calculators in it. Each bag can hold up to 20 calculators.

  1. Show or tell how Luis and Mara can pack up the calculators so that Ms. Alfonso has the fewest number of bags to store.
  2. Write a number sentence to show your answer.
