TIMS Task

Use this DPP to practice using a break-apart strategy to solve multiplication problems using the last six facts.

Possible strategies:

  1. 6 × 8 = 6 × (5 + 3)
             = 6 × 5 + 6 × 3
             = 30 + 18
             = 48
  2. 8 × 7 = 8 × (5 + 2)
             = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2)
             = 40 + 16
             = 56
  3. 4 × 8 = 4 × (5 + 3)
             = (4 × 5) + (4 × 3)
             = 20 + 12
             = 32

X. Break-Apart Facts

Kevin said, “To multiply 6 × 7, I break apart 7 into 5 + 2. Then I multiply 6 × 5 = 30 and
6 × 2 = 12 and add 30 + 12 = 42.”

Use Kevin's method to multiply:

  1. 6 × 8
  2. 8 × 7
  3. 4 × 8
