TIMS Challenge

Use DPP item F as a Problem of the Week.

Remind students that a square is a special kind of rectangle. Give students grid paper and suggest they draw several copies of the figure and mark the rectangles they find with a colored pencil or marker. Before they start work, you could give them a ballpark figure of the answer, such as about 25 rectangles. Challenge them to find as many as they can.

Square rectangles

Non-square rectangles

Total: 14 + 22 = 36 rectangles

F. Counting Rectangles

How many rectangles can you find in this figure?
