Lesson 4

Compact Multiplication Revisited

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

Ask students to add the compact method to the multiplication menu they created in Lesson 2. Have them meet with a partner and each make up a problem multiplying a two-digit number by a two-digit number. Partners trade problems and solve them using the compact method. Each partner explains all of his or her steps to the other. Students check their solutions by solving the problems using another paper-and-pencil method or mental math. Suggest they use the multiplication menus they created in Lesson 2 or the two Multidigit Multiplication Menus in their Student Guide Reference section.

Students complete the Multiplication Quiz 2 Assessment Master in the Teacher Guide.

Use the Multiplication Quiz 2 Assessment Master with the Feedback Box to assess students' abilities to demonstrate understanding of place value concepts and mathematical properties involved in multidigit multiplication [E1], show connections between models [E2], estimate products [E3], multiply using mental math strategies and paper-and-pencil methods [E4] use the compact method [E5], and choose appropriately among strategies and methods [E6].

Targeted practice for Expectations 1–4 is in the Lesson 3 Workshop.
