Lesson 5

Choosing Strategies to Multiply

Est. Class Sessions: 2

Summarizing the Lesson

After groups finish their designs, have each student individually draw the group's final design using a ruler on the TIMSville Dance Floor Final Design page and explain their strategies on the How We Designed the Dance Floor page. Have students review and revise their own work—or else peer review each other's work—using Math Practices 2, 3, and 5 on the Math Practices page as a guide.

Use the Dancing in TIMSville pages with the Feedback Box in the Student Activity Book to assess students' progress on the following Expectations:

E6. Choose appropriately from among estimation, mental math strategies, and paper-and-pencil methods to multiply multidigit numbers.
MPE2. Find a strategy. I choose good tools and an efficient strategy for solving the problem.
MPE3. Check for reasonableness. I look back at my solution to see if my answer makes sense. If it does not, I try again.
MPE5. Show my work. I show or tell how I arrived at my answer so someone else can understand my thinking.
