4 NBT.B
Use place value understanding and properties of operaitons to perform multi-digit arithmetic.(4NBT.B.5)
4.OA.A
Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. (4.OA.A.3)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP7.
Look for and make sense of structure.

Students extend their understanding of multiplication concepts to multiplication of 2-digit by 2-digit numbers. They use mental math, rectangles, and expanded form to find solutions.

Content in this Lesson

  • Multiplying numbers that are multiples of ten.
  • Using place value concepts and the distributive property to multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers [E1].
  • Showing connections between the rectangle model of multiplication and expanded form [E2].
  • Estimating products of multidigit numbers and explaining one's reasoning [E3].
  • Multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit numbers using mental math strategies, rectangle models, and expanded form [E4].
  • Demonstrating fluency with the division facts for the last six facts [E7].
