UNIT PREPARATION

Display the Math Practices page where all students can see it.

Gather centimeter connecting cubes.

Gather 100 cc and 250 cc graduated cylinders, small containers for water, and eyedroppers.

Gather objects to measure in a graduated cylinder. (See Lesson 1 Materials Preparation.)

Gather marbles or spheres in two different sizes: standard (5/8 inch and 3/4 inch)

Gather clear plastic spinners or paper clips and pencils.

Gather empty 1-liter bottles and empty containers of different sizes. (See Lesson 4 Materials Preparation.)

Gather two clear 1-liter pitchers and a 1-quart container.

Gather a 1-cup measure and other examples of units of measure. (See Lesson 5 Materials Preparation.)

Prepare your students to bring sandwiches to class for Lesson 6.

Gather sets of standard masses and two-pan balances.

Gather napkins, plastic wrap, or wax paper for Lesson 6.

Gather sets of fraction circle pieces and base-ten pieces for the End-of-Year Test.

Gather 2 odd-shaped jars or containers, one that is between 500 cc and 1500 cc and the other that is between 1000 cc and 2000 cc. (See Teacher Notes for DPP items E and G.)

Copy 2 or 3 sheets of Centimeter Graph Paper for each student for use in the unit.

Students will need the following tools readily available for the Daily Practice and Problems items in this unit:

LESSON SESSIONS DESCRIPTION SUPPLIES

LESSON 1

Measuring Volume

1–2 Students discuss volume using the context of the Aesop's Fable The Crow and the Pitcher. The procedure for finding the volume of an object by displacement is modeled for students. Students estimate and measure the volume of small objects.
  • centimeter connecting cubes
  • 250 cc graduated cylinders
  • containers of water
  • eyedroppers
  • objects to measure in a graduated cylinder
  • paper towels

LESSON 2

Fill It First Game

1 In this game, teams of students compete against each other to predict the volume of all the marbles in a graduated cylinder as one to four marbles are added to their cylinders. The winner is the team with the highest score after each team has added a total of 20 cc of marbles.

This game prepares students for the lab in Lesson 3 Volume vs. Number. It provides practice measuring volume by displacement and also provides the context for the data collection and predictions students will make in the lab.
  • 100 cc graduated cylinders
  • marbles
  • containers of water
  • eyedroppers
  • paper towels
  • clear plastic spinners or paper clips and pencils

LESSON 3

Volume vs. Number

3–4 Students use the TIMS Laboratory Method to collect, organize, graph, and analyze data of the volume of different numbers of marbles. They look for patterns in the data that will help them estimate the volume of a given number of marbles. Lesson 2 Fill It First Game provides the context for the lab.
  • 250 cc graduated cylinders
  • standard-size marbles (5/8-inch diameter)
  • 3/4-inch plastic spheres or marbles larger than standard size
  • container for marbles
  • container of water
  • eyedropper
  • paper towels
  • rulers

LESSON 4

Units of Volume

1 Students express the volume of containers using different units of metric measure, including liters, milliliters, and cubic centimeters.
  • 250 cc graduated cylinders
  • containers of water
  • eyedroppers
  • empty 1-liter bottles
  • paper towels
  • lemons
  • empty containers of different sizes
  • clear liter pitchers

LESSON 5

Writing Rules

1–2 Students identify relationships between units of measure (e.g., liters and milliliters) by looking for patterns in function tables and writing rules to express the relationships.
  • 1-cup measure
  • 1-quart container
  • examples of units of measure, optional

LESSON 6

Sandwich Mass

2–3 Students find the mass of a sandwich using a two-pan balance. They then see how the mass changes as bites are taken out of the sandwich and use patterns in the data to predict the number of bites in the whole sandwich. A discussion in the Student Guide helps students explore the distinction between mass and weight.
  • sandwiches
  • pieces of napkin, plastic wrap, or wax paper
  • calculators
  • rulers
  • blank paper
  • sets of standard masses
  • two-pan balances

LESSON 7

Patterns and Problems

1–2 Students complete a series of word problems that review patterns, function machines, and graphing.
  • calculators
  • rulers
  • fraction circle pieces
  • base-ten pieces
