Lesson 7

Patterns and Problems

Est. Class Sessions: 1–2

Summarizing the Lesson

Discuss Question 8 in the Student Activity Book. Ask students to share the line they drew for Question 8C with at least 2 other pairs of students.

  • Did you sketch your line in the same place?
  • Where does Grace's line meet the vertical axis? (0,120)
  • What does that 120 mean? (The starting mass of the sandwich)
  • Where does Grace's line meet the horizontal axis? (Responses will vary. In order to meet the criteria that Grace takes bigger bites than Nila, she should take less than 6 bites to finish her sandwich, so her line would cross the horizontal axis at less than 6).

Assign Check-In: Questions 9–10 in the Student Activity Book.

Use Check-in: Questions 9–10 in the Student Activity Book and the corresponding Feedback Box to assess student's abilities to meet the following Expectations:

  • Identify and extend patterns for decreasing functions [E1].
  • Represent patterns and functions using words, tables, and graphs [E2].
  • Solve problems involving mass [E4].
  • Draw best-fit lines for decreasing functions [E10].
  • Make predictions and generalizations using a graph [E12].
