TIMS Bit

Answers will vary. To begin, ask the class to skip count in unison. Students can use stopwatches or the second hand on a class clock.

It may help students to write down the fractions. You can adapt the activity so that students time how long it takes them to write the fractions.

C. Fraction Skip Counting 1

Work with a partner on these problems. Take turns timing each other.

  1. Skip count by fourths from 1/4 to 4. Time how long it takes you. Use mixed numbers. Start like this: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 1, 11/4, 12/4, 13/4, 2, etc.
  2. Skip count by fourths again. Time how long it takes you. This time, count using improper fractions except for whole numbers. Start like this: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 1, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, 2, 9/4, 10/4 , etc.
  3. Skip count by fourths again. Time how long it takes you. This time, count using mixed numbers in simplest form. Start like this: 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 1, 11/4, 11/2, 13/4, 2, etc.
