Part 3: Many Ways to Show Numbers

Use a display of the Many Ways to Show a Number Master to help students connect different representations of numbers. Demonstrate showing different representions of the number 5. See Figure 3. Select a number from zero through four and write it on the space indicated at the top. Ask four different students to represent it on the display by drawing cubes, tallies, counters on the ten frame, or showing hops on the number line as indicated. Repeat this procedure selecting a number from six through ten. Repeat the activity randomly selecting a variety of numbers from zero through ten. Discuss similarities and differences in the various representations of the numbers.

Observe students while discussing Many Ways to Show Numbers in Part 3 of the lesson to assess students' abilities to represent numbers from 1 to 10 [E1] and make connections between different representations [E2].

Use the Number Book: Many Ways to Show a Number 0–10 Masters to provide targeted practice with writing numbers and connecting various representations of numbers [E1, E2.] Students complete representations left blank and write the number on the spaces provided. When drawing a set of objects, an additional space is provided for students to label the drawing with a word or phrase. See Figure 4.
