Two Ten Frames

Homework and Practice

  • Assign the More Ten Frames, Number Lines, and Tallies Homework Masters. Review the example and ask questions to help students make connections between the numbers on the number line and their representations on ten frames, tallies, and symbols.

For example, show 12 on a ten frame display and ask students to locate 12 on their number lines on their desks, then ask:

  • How many more is 12 than 10? Can you show that on the number line? On the ten frames? With tally marks? With numbers?
  • Find 19 on your number line. How many units do you have to go to get from 19 to 20? If I show you 19 on the ten frames, how many boxes will be empty? How many groups of five will there be with tally marks?
  • Provide each student with 2 sets of copies of the 0–20 Small Ten Frames Cards Masters. Students can use these cards to play Ten Frame Flash and Ten Frame War at home with a family member.
  • Assign DPP items S–V.

Math Facts. In items S and T, students develop strategies for counting on and counting back. Items U and V provide practice with partitioning numbers.
