Students learn to represent numbers on a ten frame and visualize numbers using five and ten as benchmarks. Students use connecting cubes and number lines to represent numbers. This lesson lays a foundation for using ten frames as a tool to solve problems.

Content in this Lesson

  • Developing number sense using 5 and 10 as benchmarks and using part-whole relationships.
  • Identifying and representing quantities from 1 to 10 using diagrams, ten frames, connecting cubes, tallies, number lines, and symbols [E1].
  • Identifying partitions of numbers from 1 to 10 using ten frames and connecting cubes [E3].
  • Making connections between different representations of quantities (ten frames, tallies, connecting cubes, number lines, and symbols) [E2].
  • Recognizing quantities by comparing them to the benchmarks 5 and 10 using ten frames [E4].

Display of Many Ways to Show a Number Master (Teacher Guide) several copies
Unit 3 Assessment Record
10 counters, such as beans or pennies

Materials Preparation

Prepare Ten Frames Flash Cards. Make copies of the 0–10 Ten Frames Flash Cards Masters on card stock. Cut apart the cards and shuffle to mix the order. You may wish to laminate the cards prior to cutting to make them more durable for repeated use. Another option is to display the Masters using a projector.
