Mathematical Standards

1.OA.A
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. (1.OA.A.1, 1.OA.A.2)
1.OA.C
Add and subtract within 20. (1.OA.C.6)

Standards for Mathematical Practice

MP1.
Make sense of problems and persevere in
solving them.
MP2.
Reason quantitatively.
MP4.
Model with mathematics.
MP5.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
MP6.
Attend to precision.

Students solve problems as they use pennies and price tags to "purchase" items in a classroom store. They explore multiple strategies for finding solutions.

Content in this Lesson

  • Solving addition problems using the counting-on strategy [E5].
  • Representing addition situations using ten frames, counters, number lines, and number sentences [E6].
  • Solving addition word problems (e.g., adding to, putting together, and comparing) involving two whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20 using a ten frame [E7].
  • Finding a strategy for solving an addition problem [MPE2].
  • Explaining a solution to an addition problem [MPE5].

Materials Preparation

Display "Store" Items. Create a display of items with price tags as shown in Figure 1. You may also bring in four or five objects and add your own price tags. The objects can be thematically related, such as items found in a toy store or school supplies. Classroom items (e.g., sticker, pencil, crayon, and eraser) can also be identified. Students may contribute items from their desks for the display. The display needs to be easily seen by all students.
