Ask a student to show or tell how to use ten frames to solve the problem.

Possible responses:

  1. I put 8 pennies in my ten frame and I knew that I needed two more.
  2. I put 5 pennies in my ten frame. I took 1 out for the shirt pocket. I had 4 pennies left for the pants pocket.

Encourage students to write number sentences.

  1. 8¢ + 2¢ = 10¢
  2. 1¢ + 4¢ = 5¢

  1. Sue found ten pennies in her pockets. Eight pennies were in her shirt pocket. How many were in her pants pocket?
  2. Sue found five pennies in her pockets. One penny was in a shirt pocket. How many were in her pants pocket?
