Ask students to use their 45-link chains, ten frames, or number lines. Counting up from the lower number is another common strategy that is used. Ask students to share their strategies.

  1. Tim's roller skate rolled 10 links and Patty's car rolled 13 links. How much farther did Patty's car roll than Tim's skate?
  2. Jeff's car rolled 12 links and Gary's car rolled 16 links. How much farther did Gary's car roll?
