For Question 1, place a number of pennies, such as 23, on a display. Ask students for suggestions on how to count them. Possible strategies include: counting by ones, twos, fives, and tens. Encourage students to skip count and then count leftovers by ones. Use a display of the Ten Frames Master and coins to illustrate strategies for finding the value of a collection of coins by grouping, skip counting, and counting on.
