  • One Grain of Rice by Demi. A similar doubling tale is set in India. In this tale, a young woman teaches a raja a lesson about sharing.
  • A Grain of Rice by Helena Clare Pittman. This is a Chinese version of the story of a reward of doubling grains of rice for 100 days. In this tale, a young man wins the hand of the emperor's daughter through hard work and cleverness.
  • The King's Chessboard by David Birch. The story of the doubling of rice on the chessboard is retold in a different way. The rice is measured in ounces, pounds, and tons.
  • The Rajah's Rice: A Mathematical Folktale from India by David Barry. When Zandra, the official bather of the Rajah's elephants, saves them from serious illness, she exacts from the Rajah a reward more costly than he realizes.
  • How Much Is a Million? by David Schwartz. The author uses things children know, such as goldfish and stars, to illustrate the concepts of a million, a billion, and a trillion.
