Lesson 4

Big Base-Ten Pieces

Est. Class Sessions: 3

Homework and Practice

  • Students can complete the Big Numbers pages in the Student Activity Book for homework after Part 1.
  • Assign the Homework section in the Student Guide. Students need to take home the Draw, Place, and Read page and a set of Digit Cards 0–9.
  • Assign DPP items I–N. Bit I is a review of division with zero. In Task L students find an appropriate strategy, possibly multiplication, to find the cost of sets of ping pong paddles, balls, and nets for $29 and $17 for seven tables. Bit M reviews using place value to compare large numbers.
  • Challenge N can be assigned as a Problem of the Week. This item asks students to fold paper a number of times. Charting the results provides a review of exponents. The chart in this item is compared to the table in Question 2 in the Student Guide for Lesson 3.

Math Facts. In Task J, students use a division fact to find the mean of five numbers. They practice writing the number sentences in fact families for DPP Bit K.
