Developing the Lesson

Part 4: Raising Money

Use Check-In: Question 23 in the Raising Money section in the Student Guide to review the expectations in the Math Practices page of the Reference section in the Student Guide with your students. Begin by reading the short vignette that gives the context for this problem. Read the problem together and discuss what is being asked. Ask students for suggestions of how Math Practices Expectations 1, 3, 5, and 6 relate to this particular problem. Record students' comments about how they can write their responses to meet these Expectations on a display of the Math Practices Notes Master. Remind students to refer to their notes and comments on the display as they work.

After students have completed their paragraphs, have them use the Math Practices page to self-assess their work. Allow students the option of revising their paragraphs if they see a need to do so.

Once students have revised their work, have them share their solutions with other students. Hearing how others solve a problem will often help students refine their own thinking.

Use Check-In: Question 23 in the Student Guide and the corresponding Feedback Box to assess students' abilities to estimate sums of large numbers [E9]; know the question to answer [MPE1]; check for reasonableness of the solution [MPE3]; explain his or her solution so others can understand how he or she thought about the problem [MPE5]; and use labels to show what the numbers mean [MPE6].

The Workshop in Lesson 7 provides targeted practice.
