Materials Preparation

Hang a Wire. Hang a wire (string, twine, or cord) 5–10 meters in length where it is easily accessible to students. See Before the Lesson.

Gather Resources to Find Large Numbers. There are three options for finding large numbers described in Before the Lesson. The materials needed are dependent on each option. For Option A, students will need internet access and you will need to make copies of the Big Number Search Master. For Option B, you will need newspapers. For Option C, you will need to make copies of both pages of the Big Number News Master. See Before the Lesson.

Prepare Index Cards. Cut two 3 × 5 inch index cards in half lengthwise and punch a hole in the narrow end of each card for each student. Attach paper clips to hang the cards.

Prepare Display Space. Clear space on a bulletin board or wall for students to sort and place the large numbers they find in articles or blurbs. Provide space for different size numbers.
